A Quick Guide To Electrical Panels: 8 Signs You Need Help
Northwest Contractors Blog - Electrical Panels

Recently moved in? Your home’s electrical panels, often called a breaker box or fuse box, is the unsung hero of your electrical system.

It’s the central hub that safely distributes electricity throughout your entire home, powering everything from your lights and appliances to your charging devices.

But what exactly is it, why is it so important, and when should you consider having it inspected or upgraded?

Well, don’t worry, as our experts here at Northwest Contractors are here to break it down for you:

First off… What is an Electrical Panel?

Think of it as the “brain” of your home’s electrical system.

It’s typically a metal box, often found in your garage, basement, utility closet or even an outdoor wall. Inside, you’ll find a series of switches called circuit breakers (or fuses in older homes).

With this in mind, the electricity from your utility company enters your home through the main service wires and goes directly to this panel. The panel then divides this incoming power into smaller circuits, each protected by its own circuit breaker.

Each circuit breaker controls the electricity flow to a specific area or set of outlets/appliances in your home. So when a circuit is overloaded (too much electricity is being drawn), the breaker “trips” and cuts off power to prevent overheating and potential hazards like fires.

So… Why is Your Electrical Panel So Important?

The importance of a well-functioning electrical panel cannot be overstated. It plays several critical roles in:

  • Safety: It’s your primary defence against electrical overloads, short circuits and power surges. By tripping when there’s an issue, it prevents damage to your appliances, wiring, and most importantly, protects your home and family from electrical fires or shocks.
  • Power Distribution: It ensures that every part of your home receives the right amount of power safely and efficiently.
  • System Control: It allows you to easily turn off power to specific areas of your home for repairs, maintenance, or in an emergency.

But… When Does Your Electrical Panel Need an Inspection or Upgrade?

While electrical panels are built to last, they aren’t maintenance-free and may need attention over time, especially with the increasing electrical demands of modern homes. Which is why here are key signs it might be time for an inspection or upgrade:

1. Frequent Tripping Breakers: If your circuit breakers are constantly tripping, it’s a clear sign that your system is overloaded or outdated and can’t handle your current electrical needs.

2. Flickering or Dimming Lights: Lights that flicker or dim when appliances turn on can indicate an overloaded circuit or inadequate power supply.

3. Hearing Buzzing, Humming or Crackling Sounds: Any unusual noises coming from your electrical panel are red flags and should be investigated immediately by a professional.

4. Having Burning Smells or Scorched Outlets: This is an emergency! If you smell burning plastic, a “fishy” odour or see scorch marks around outlets or the panel, call an electrician right away!

5. Outdated Panel (Fuse Box): If your home still uses a fuse box instead of circuit breakers, it’s highly recommended to upgrade for improved safety and convenience. Fuse boxes are often insufficient for modern electrical loads.

6. Adding New Appliances or Renovations: Planning to install a new air conditioning unit, EV charger, hot tub, or undertake a major renovation? These additions significantly increase electrical demand and often require a panel upgrade to safely accommodate the new load.

7. Home Age: If your home is 20-30 years old or more and has never had an electrical panel inspection or upgrade, it’s a good idea to have a certified electrician assess its condition.

8. Rust or Corrosion: Visible rust or corrosion on the panel or breakers can indicate moisture issues and compromise safety.

Honestly, your electrical panel is too important to ignore.
